Princess Cuff
c. 2002
Sterling silver
This was made for my friend Sara, whose name means "princess." The Chinese word for princess is 公主 (
gong zhu), so I took the
cursive (also known as grass script) versions of those characters and then stacked, connected and further stylized them. Once that was
sawed out of sterling sheet, it was hammered around an oval mandrel into the cuff bracelet pictured at left. The result is what at first glance seems like an elegant, abstract and whimsical design that holds a deeper meaning. Here it is on her
wrist.
